Top 5 Tips for Getting and Staying Organized

Tip # 1

Keep the things that you love and use, then let go of the rest. Less really is more when it come to maintaining an organized space. After I did a major overhaul of all my stuff, getting dressed in the morning became more fun, cleaning up took less time and I saved a little money because I started going to the library where they have literally every book and I can read them all for free.

Tip # 2

Break your storage space up into smaller areas and store things that are alike in these little spaces. I love to re-use nice boxes in drawers (shout-out to Marie Kondo) which become obvious homes for their contents, no labeling required. Adding shelves to a closet, cabinet or utility area can also really improve the functionality of that space and is well-worth the investment. Baskets (and any container really) are great for storing things on shelves, especially the hard to reach ones. Have fun with it, use what you have and hire a handy-person!

Tip # 3

Identify your deep storage and put off-season and only occasionally used items there. In the winter, I throw beautiful fabric over my AC and call it a shelf for plants that I need to bring inside. Above the fridge is great deep storage for overstock and specialty cookery while on-top of the fridge is perfect for my slow cooker which I use weekly. Camping gear, fans, humidifiers and off season shoes are all things that I would stow away on the top shelf of a closet while I like to keep my vacuum super handy, because ya’ll know, I love to keep it tidy!

Tip # 4

Practice gratitude. When we are thankful for what we have, we take good care of it! For me, this looks like meditation, burning incense, watering plants, shoes off in the house and an air humidifier. Breathing in the beautiful clean oxygenated air in my home makes me feel calm, happy and ready to tackle my day.

Tip # 5

Be mindful when bringing new things into your home and make sure they are in alignment with your goals. Take a moment to focus on your breath and ask yourself: Do I already have something like this? Do I look good AND feel comfortable in this? Is this good for the environment? Do I want this just because it’s free or on sale? Do I have space for this...?
